Palmer Cox (1840-1924) The Brownies is a series of publications by Canadian illustrator and author Palmer Cox, based on names and elements from English traditional mythology and Scottish stories told to Cox by his grandmother. Cox's Brownies were little men who had mischievous adventures together. In 1883, Brownie stories appeared in St. Nicholas Magazine and as their popularity rose, they were covered in publications such as the Ladies Home Journal for more than 30 years. While largely forgotten today, Cox was a beloved household name for children in the 1880's through the early 1900's. By the 1890's the Brownies were the first cartoon figures to be used in mass merchandising and advertising.
